The initiative of coming the community and the university to ensure that learning and training is co-created, relevant, geographically accessible and affordable. It is not the same as teaching in the community or doing service to the community (service learning) but these could be some aspects of it. In a communiversity:
- The teaching and learning programs are co-created by the community and a local university
- There may be a university and community partnership or an entirely new setup that is neither a university or a community program but a combination of the community and university
- Administration is shared
- Programs learned or taught respond to the local problems
- There can be collaboration with other communiversities
