maJina | Directory of Africa Names

This is a directory of names used in families, communities, languages and cultures of Africa. To add a name, click Submit a Jina button. Add the jina, describe it (what does it mean, is it for boys, girls or both; which languages, cultures of countries is it found). Do not add names in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Arabic or any other non-African language. There is an option to add an audio pronunciation, please email asw@africasocialwork.net with short audio pronouncing the name 1-5 times or use the email to ask for our WhatsApp number to send the audio.

Chipo
Chipo is name for girls but also girls but also for boys. It means a gift, usually a gift from ancestors and God.

The name is found in Shona speaking communities, mainly in Zimbabwe but also in Zambia, Mozambique and Botswana.
