Rifa – Africa knowledge heritage

Rifa means knowledge or heritage. Africa is endowed with a rich heritage of knowledge covering all facets of life – social, economic, spiritual, political, environmental, philosophical and many more. This knowledge was passed down from generation to generation, and informs everyday decisions people make but is often under-utilised in professions like social work and development. Some of this wisdom is now recorded, in video, audio, textual, graphic or artistic formats but most of it remains oral and practical. This space shares some of this knowledge.

Rifa includes folklore, songs, stories, genealogies (family trees), oral histories, poems, metaphor or idiom, proverbs, gestures, riddles, judgements, paintings and sculptures. Rifa also includes skills, experiences, wisdoms, rules, methods, names, ceremonies, rituals, observations of nature and designs.
