Kiondo concept
« Back to Glossary Index
Kiondo (Gikuyu or Kikuyu language) is a woven bag, basket or tray. Kiondo is carried when a person visits another, and inside will be the visitor’s gift. The visitor will take the gift and at the end of the visit, they will return the bag with their gift. The gifts all have to be appropriate. This shows that visiting is reciprocal and relational.
In social work and development work, kiondo is both a value and an ethic. When you visit a family or individual, it is important to carry kiondo. Not doing so will be considered disrespectful.
