External event: Global to Grounded: Local Wisdom and the Future of International Social Work
Are you curious about international social work practice? Are you an educator or practitioner for whom it is already an area of practice? If so, this webinar is for you.
We are pleased to invite you to an upcoming webinar, “Global to Grounded: Local Wisdom and the Future of International Social Work,” offered by the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE-ACFTS) International Affairs Committee, in partnership with the University of Calgary.
The International Affairs Committee works to advance global engagement within social work by fostering dialogue, collaboration, and critical reflection on international practice, policy, and solidarity across contexts. Through initiatives like this webinar, the Committee seeks to strengthen ethical, reciprocal, and justice-oriented approaches to global social work.
Scheduled for Thursday, February 26, from 1:00–2:30 PM EST (13h00–14h30 HNE), this webinar explores how international social work and community development can be reshaped through knowledge rooted in local realities rather than through the transfer of Western frameworks. As global challenges intensify—including migration, inequality, climate crises, and rising conflict—international actors continue to intervene in diverse communities. Yet these interventions often overlook Indigenous, Global South, and grassroots perspectives.
The discussion will feature:
- Dr. Abye Tassé
- Dr. Julie Drolet
- Dr. Kristen Gurdak
- Dr. Rebecca Thomas
Moderated by Dr. Aamir Jamal, this conversation promises thoughtful engagement on how local wisdom can meaningfully inform and transform international social work practice.
