Akhenaten was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty who introduced the worship of a single deity, Aten, the sun disc. His religious reforms marked a departure from traditional Egyptian polytheism. He established a new capital, Akhetaten, and focused on art, poetry, and devotion. After his death, Egypt returned to its older beliefs. His reign is seen as one of the earliest known experiments with monotheism.
