Amílcar Cabral
Amílcar Cabral led the independence struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in Guinea-
Bissau and Cape Verde. A trained agronomist, he combined armed resistance with political
education. Cabral was assassinated in 1973, shortly before Guinea-Bissau’s independence. He
is respected as both a fighter and a thinker in the decolonisation process.
