Cheikh Anta Diop

Cheikh Anta Diop was a Senegalese scholar who challenged dominant views of African
history. He argued that ancient Egypt was a Black African civilisation and promoted the study
of African languages and cultures. His work was initially controversial but later influential in
decolonising historical narratives. Diop’s scholarship still informs African studies.
