Houari Boumédiène
Houari Boumédiène succeeded Ben Bella as President of Algeria and ruled from 1965 to 1978. He nationalised natural resources and promoted state-led development. He supported anti-colonial movements and worked for African and Arab solidarity. His leadership consolidated the post-independence state and increased Algeria’s influence on the continent.
