Kaleb of Axum
Kaleb was a 6th-century king of the Axumite Empire, based in present-day Ethiopia and
Eritrea. He is known for his military expeditions across the Red Sea and his strong ties to
Christianity. Kaleb defended persecuted Christians in southern Arabia and established
diplomatic relations with Byzantium. He later abdicated to become a monk.
