Kandake Amanirenas was a queen of the ancient Kushite kingdom in Nubia who defeated
Roman forces in the first century BCE. She led military campaigns and defended her territory
fiercely. A treaty ensured Nubian autonomy for decades. She is remembered as a powerful
African monarch.
