Laurent-Désiré Kabila
Laurent-Désiré Kabila led a rebellion that overthrew the long-time dictator Mobutu Sese
Seko in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1997. He declared a return to national
sovereignty and renamed the country. His rule faced internal conflict and criticism before his
assassination in 2001. His son succeeded him as President.
