Modibo Keïta
Modibo Keïta was the first President of Mali after independence in 1960. A committed
socialist, he pursued policies of economic centralisation and African unity. He aligned Mali
with other non-aligned states during the Cold War. His government was overthrown in a coup
in 1968. Keïta is remembered for his ideals of sovereignty and socialism.
