Nana Yaa Asantewaa
Nana Yaa Asantewaa was a queen mother of the Asante in present-day Ghana who led the War of the Golden Stool against British forces in 1900. She took command when male leaders hesitated, mobilising a large resistance. Though eventually captured and exiled, her leadership is honoured across Ghana. She became a symbol of anti-colonial defiance.
