Okinka Pampa Kayimpa
Okinka Pampa Kayimpa was a queen and spiritual leader of the Bijago Islands off the coast
of Guinea-Bissau. She upheld matriarchal authority and resisted colonial intrusion into her
society. Her leadership blended ritual authority with military strategy. She protected the
islands’ autonomy during a period of Portuguese expansion.
