Patrice Lumumba
Patrice Lumumba was the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo after
it gained independence from Belgium in 1960. He was outspoken against colonial
exploitation and demanded full sovereignty. His government quickly fell into crisis, and he
was captured and executed with foreign involvement. Lumumba is widely seen as a martyr
for African freedom.
