Tariq ibn Ziyad
Tariq ibn Ziyad was a military commander who led the Moors across the Strait of Gibraltar
into the Iberian Peninsula in 711. He initiated the Islamic conquest of Spain, defeating the
Visigothic king. The Rock of Gibraltar is named after him. His leadership marked the
beginning of centuries of Islamic rule in southern Europe.
