Wangari Maathai
Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan environmentalist and the first African woman to receive the
Nobel Peace Prize. She founded the Green Belt Movement, which promoted tree planting and
women’s empowerment. Her activism drew government hostility, but she persisted in her
efforts. She linked environmental protection with human rights and democracy.
