Julius Nyerere

Julius Nyerere was the first President of Tanzania and the architect of ujamaa, a form of
African socialism. He emphasised collective farming, self-reliance, and education. Though
his policies were economically challenging, he is praised for integrity and dedication to unity.
Nyerere also supported liberation struggles across southern Africa.
