Samora Machel
Samora Machel was the first President of Mozambique after independence from Portugal in 1975. He led the FRELIMO movement and introduced socialist policies. He opposed superstition and prioritised education and unity. Machel died in a plane crash in 1986 under mysterious circumstances.
