Wawa aba: The hard, resilient seed

The Wawa Aba is the seed of the Wawa tree, one of the hardest woods in the West African forest. Because the seed is incredibly tough, the symbol represents hardiness, toughness, perseverance, and resilience. In Akan culture, it inspires individuals to show fortitude and strength when facing hardships, highlighting the ability to overcome difficult obstacles.
- Resilience in academia: Cultivates the toughness students and scholars need to overcome systemic barriers and Eurocentric biases.
- Student as seed: Views Black learners as inherently strong, filled with latent potential waiting to grow, rather than deficient.
- Methodological hardiness: Champions research deeply rooted in indigenous African frameworks that challenge dominant, Westernized academic models.
- Sustaining community knowledge: Focuses on building durable, intergenerational education designed to protect and uplift the global African community.
